Grade 3 – How The World Works – Structures

In this unit, students explore factors related to building structures in the classroom and human structures in PE.

Central Idea: Many factors influence the design and building of structures

Key Concepts: Form, Function, Causation                    Related Concepts: Perspective, Change, Reflection

Lines of Inquiry: 1. Why building technology is changing over time (reflection) 2. The impact of building technology on society (causation) 3. The factors considered when designing and building structures (function) 4. The physics associated with structures (function).

After a recent webinar presentation with Connected PE, I have decided  to try a new format for these blog posts. Instead of a lot of text, I have voiced over the videos of my lessons/sessions explaining all of our learning engagements and eventually, the whole unit in a series of videos. Therefore, I hope you enjoy week 1, the introduction to our journey of creating human pyramids and other structures.

This first session has been divided in to 2 short videos due to the size of the files, pt. 1 & 2

The second session continued on from the first, but then we tried to extend ourselves and make it bigger.

The following week I wanted to let the students try the full class pyramid once again but then also take it a different direction and connect with what they were learning in class which was a variety of structures.

As we continued the unit, I wanted to ensure I connected with some of the vocabulary the students had been using in the classroom.

The next session saw us take a different direction and connect with their classroom inquiries by making human bridges! (Sorry, had to break the clip in to two parts due to file size)

Summative Assessment

We spent the start of the next session discussing our ideas for summative assessment tasks and it was clear that the students wanted to take their ideas in different directions. Students organically broke up in to groups and started discussing ideas. They moved around and asked what was being discussed before moving on to find the right group for them. They spent the rest of this session and all of the next working on their ideas which would be a variety of human structure performances.

The following videos are the final group performances. I have over-dubbed some of the videos to give you further insight but most of them are as they were performed, enjoy.

Fantastic step by step guide – thanks so much for sharing! So useful to share and reflect with PE teachers who are just “getting started” with inquiry-based learning in their classes.
